Catherine Mobley honored with Class of ’39 award

Clemson University sociology professor Catherine Mobley has been awarded the Class of ’39 Award for Excellence. Mobley’s research is on sustainability; environmental sociology; and technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Her focus is on identifying the human factors – cultural, social, economic and political – that influence environmental and educational policies. “I am truly honored to receive the Class of ’39 Award for Excellence,” said Mobley. “I am humbled to know that my peers have selected me for this recognition, a true high point of my career at Clemson University.” Since 1996, Mobley has been involved in nearly 35 grants and contracts totaling more than $6.4 million. They included three major grants from the National Science Foundation, and additional funding from such agencies as the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, the United Way of Pickens County and the Clemson University Restoration Institute. “Catherine Mobley is much deserving of the Class of ’39 Award,” said Bobby McCormick, interim dean of the College of Business and Behavioral Science. “Mobley is a leading example of a top researcher and dedicated teacher. We are very proud of her achievements.” The Class of 1939 established the Award for Excellence in 1989 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the class. The award is presented annually to a member of the faculty whose outstanding contributions for a five-year period have been judged by his or her peers to represent the highest achievement of service to the university, the student body and the larger community.
