Preserving History Through Technology

Scientists at Clemson University’s Warren Lasch Laboratory in Charleston, SC have figured out a way to utilize state-of-the-art digital scanning technology to better preserve historic structures in and around the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The program making this possible is known as the Lowcountry Digital Documentation Initiative (LDDI) and its objective is to develop new and leading protocols and processes to document cultural heritage through laser scanning, photogrammetry and structured light scanning. The hopes are that the LDDI can be implemented not only within the Carolinas and Georgia but on a global scale, so that the world’s historic structures will be around for generations to come.
